Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor:
Please publish this Letter to the Editor.
HOW
QUICKLY WE FORGET?
For several years, I have been paying close attention to each member of the Board of Supervisors and
comparing actual performance to (a) what was promised in his or her campaign for election and (b) what each claims to be doing
at any moment. I’m apparently of a small minority that strongly believes in holding elected officials
accountable for their actions. Certain debacles have drawn me to focus on one Supervisor in particular,
because she dramatically has affected all of our lives in this county perhaps more than any of the other Supervisors.
I am literally frightened that Martha McClure could be reelected.
It is amazing to me how uninformed
some of us who put her in office choose to be and how quickly some Del Norters forget the facts concerning Ms. McClure’s
record. Where is the accountability?
FACT #1 - She originally voted against the airport’s
new joint powers authority, because she didn't want the Rancherias to be involved. Yet, the Elk Valley
Rancheria’s Tribal Council voted to endorse her over Charles Slert. Go figure.
FACT #2
- McClure voted against the free $1 million dollar Stipe funding to study Highway 199 improvements and their potential environmental
impacts. Assemblywomen Patty Berg had to ask for a second vote to bring McClure into line.
FACT #3
- McClure also voted against the County Board of Supervisors’ resolution of "No Net Loss” to protect the
County’s revenue stream from losing property tax. She wants to turn Del Norte County into a public
parkland, which would completely bankrupt an already financially challenged County treasury.
FACT #4 - Supervisor McClure
originally voted to oppose the Elk Valley Rancheria’s plans to expand development.
FACT #5 – When she
was the Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, Ms. McClure went to Washington D.C. (on a special-interest group’s nickel)
to testify in front of a Congressional subcommittee in support of Congressman Thompson's now infamous Wilderness Bill.
She represented on Capitol Hill that the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors supported the Wilderness Bill, when
it, in fact, did not. I think this was her worst abuse of the public’s trust.
It is clear to me that Martha McClure marches to the beat of a much different agenda than that of honestly trying to
represent the residents of Del Norte County.
ENOUGH! It's time for leadership that is in tune with
the people and that works for the people. The underachieved condition of this county is largely
the fault of the incumbent candidates for Supervisor. On June 3rd, I hope you folks in District 2
step up to the plate and vote for Charles Slert. If you live in District 1, vote for Jim Norton. We pray you will do this for the rest of us.
Sincerely,
Armand Trinatopoli
